failure to start k swap MR2 any help is appreciated

Post by Cavedelasell »

Hello Hondata,
I put a K20A2 into my 2002 MR2. using kproV4.
Currently the motor will crank but we cannot get it to turn over. here is a list of observations and troubleshooting tactics
Bought motor off ebay, passed leakdown, used mitch's auto k swap kit.
-replaced camshaft and crankshaft sensors
-added a 4AWG ground from bellhousing to car frame, and from timing cover to frame
-chased a lot of wiring for continuity
-locked fuel pump to run continuously via kpro
-gas into spark plug holes
-starter fluid on intake
-battery health is fine

observations/ remarks
-after long crank attempt engine compartment smells of gas
-there is pressure at fuel rail
-I havent hooked up AFR yet
-Camshaft angle reads 107degrees all of the time in Kpro software
-Throttle position sensor reads 25% until it floored
-injector dead time is stuck around 33ms which seems enormous
i have attached an older log

Thank you in advance for your help

The ECU has diodes designed to protect against excessive voltage. The threshold is roughly 18V so at 17V you're close, and if you don't have fuses the same as the factory you're going to kill the ECU when this happens. I would never go over 15.5V.

The MAP is not dropping when cranking so either the throttle is held open or the engine doesn't have much compression.

If the TPS does not work then go no further until you have found that problem and fixed it. I would then look at the crank and cam sensors because at least one of them is not working or the sensor wheels / cam timing is off.

I have replaced 1 cam sensor, the crankshaft sensor.
I will check the TPS when i can get back in the shop.
I have resolved the MAP sensor just didnt have a more recent data file svailable

It is unlikely to be the sensors and much more likely to be the wiring.

I ordered a replacement engine wiring harness anticipating that wiring may be the issue.
if that doesn't repair, kind of points to ecu, grounds, and plug n' play harness from vendor. I will have to discern exactly what is going on in the plug n' play harness. I'll upload another log once I have everything in and cranking again.

dont know if this will help or not, but, i had the same issue starting my K24 swapped Golf.

it would crank and crank but wouldn't start, ended up being i tapped into the wrong 12v ignition wire. when i would turn the key front it the pump would prime, all the wiring checked out, sensors were all good....... but trying to start would kill power to the Kpro.

found the correct 12v Ignition, re wired it and started up first crank.

I replaced the harness anyhow. It seem to have fixed the camshaft angle error. but the TPS is still acting funny. Attached is two KDL files one with and one without TPS plugged in

There appears to be a problem with the TPS if it is always reading 17 percent when it is plugged in, or you need to adjust it manually to be a close to zero as possible before calibrating it in the software.
