Looks like some nice 60* weather down there in Mexico, beautiful! :)

Looked pretty good. I made a few changes, it should be dialed after this next one. I think one more and then lets move onto the 30* cam. We could move on to the 30* cam if you want, but I think one more will dial the 20* and set us up good for easy clean up on the 30* cam. Totally up to you.

I also cleaned up and smoothed out the untouched areas of the 20* cam. And I copied and pasted the 20* cam fueling into the 30* cam. So if you do want to move onto the 30* cam it's ready. But let me know what you think.

I stuck with the 20 for now, no point in rushing it at this point and it looks MUCH better. I see the fueling from LOW/High speed or Non-VTec to VTec, it seems like you could flood the damn car and it would still go lean for a few miliseconds.

Heres an interesting little tidbit. Even with the cam locked at 20 degrees ( which should be damn close to optimum for peak power, torque not so much..)

Right at 240whp, and 160wtq. Good weather with a DA of 100,

Yeah the fueling looked solid. I liked seeing it through the various gears and it shows how much the fueling changes between load of different gears. Seeing how it leaned out in the higher gear, I made very small changes to the fueling, I would say that is pretty dialed.

Yeah some cars have a lean spike you just can't get out of there. Once we get back to a blended cam angle file we can see if we can smooth it out. Maybe move vtec up or down a little bit and see if the transition is smoother.

I always wonder how close the virtual dyno numbers are. Looks pretty solid. If you trim that spike off at the beginning the graph will look and make more sense.

Here is the next file. Like I mentioned, I made some small changes to the 20* cam, no need to reinspect it though with a datalog. I copy and pasted the 20* fuel map into the 30* table. All you need to do is set the cam angle map to 30* and then take it for a spin. We'll see how it looks on the 30* cam angle. Should clean up easy.

Sounds good. I'll swap it to 30. Thank you.

Yea that initial spike on the graph I obviously ignored. Dialed in with solid bolt ons and the mild cams I could see 240 at the absolute max. I think my DA helps inflate it too, but I did use the current weather/barometer/gearing and adjusted for tire size, frontal area, weight, and Coefficient of drag. I still think virtual dyno if setup perfectly is 3%-5% optimistic.

I use it just for comparison. It's all I've got until the weather breaks and I can get to the real dyno.

Sounds good.

Yeah there is a 9th gen Si I just finished tuning in Florida that is going on the dyno next month. Virtual Dyno said 218hp 186tq. Perhaps a touch high, but I don't know yet. I am anxious to see how close it is.

For stuff higher powered it was consistently 1%-2% high. I always wondered if it's a percentage thing or if its more like it's missing a few variables, in truth it COULD actually be accurate as you're getting real legitimate airflow at much high volume/pressure/velocity than any dyno you're going to be on.

My Skyline made 900whp on not quite kill mode at 34psi and 651wtq
20191109_130306.jpg

VirtualDyno said 916whp and 672tq. Not too bad considering. I'd really like to see a back to back like you'll be doing. It was months between when I got do some street pulls

I'd be thrilled with a 235whp setup out of this car. It seems like most well done bolt on cars make about 225ish. I've got a very good header, true 3in Exhaust, a ported and matched RBC, and slightly more aggressive cams than the original Z1/DC5R's that were in it. It should be doable I'd think.

I really like the 9th Gens. They drive fantastic with the K24 but I will say it's a very different drive. You dont get to smack 8500rpm all the time, which is really a good thing in all reality. I bet that thing makes my torque curve cry.

Headed to Mexico shortly. Thanks Kyle.

Nice. Yeah the key to Virtual Dyno being accurate is a flat stretch of road. Any uphill or downhill slope to the road will throw things off. Other than that I have heard it's very accurate for the most part when done right.

That one leaned out nicely, clear as day it likes the 30* cam more. The fueling was dead on from 7700-8250 on the 30* cam as it was on the 20*. That means we can probably run the 30* out to redline and avoid that issue where it switches between maps so much towards redline. We'll see on this next one, if this one is dead on at 7700 and up, that is probably what I would recommend in the finished product.

Anyways, here is the next one for you.

Cam angles

Post by h2.4 »

Previously you were mentioning the difference in cam angle N/a vs. boosted. What is the general consensus on stock Tsx cams when running boosted vs. Na? More or less cam angle?

I like to run what people would consider milder cams when boosted, and I I spec my turbo a little larger. Reason being is I use the more mild cams to get the turbo spooled a bit quicker, i like having a but of headroom on the turbo side if things. If I was racing in a class with limits on inducer size itd be a different story but for the street I like to leave maybe ~10-15% on the table for longevity and for when I inevitably get hungry for more. I do give credit to heads and cams, once you're smashing 20psi and up into the bottom end, well its just not nearly as crucial as trying to scavenge as much power as possible NA. Sure efficiency is paramount but in a K20A2/Z1/etc. The factory head and cam setup is plenty to make 450+ totally factory motor on Pump 93 and we've all seen plenty of 600hp cars on E85.

What turbo will you be running? Stock motor? (Or blower car?)

You could go a lot of different ways.

For example of you had a tiny GReddy turbo kit maybe youd try to eek out all it's got and go hyper aggressive on the cam setup/angle. *which would be pointless but still for a shitty example

Hi Brian,

Interesting how inconsistent those three datalogs were. The third gear pull was lean throughout and very lean at the end. Your 1-2-3 pull was pretty good, then you 3-4 pull was lean and then came back into spec. Not sure what is going on there. Your car has been super consistent.

I made the fuel changes based on the Rev 7-1 pull as it had the most data out of all of them. Take it for a spin and we'll hope the consistency comes back.

I was just looking at that and playing around, crazy.. its not done that yet like you pointed out...Weird variation of the AFR. I'll go try that again.
