B18C1 Rev Limiter kicking in

Post by ProjectL »

Hi everyone! First post here and thanks in advance to anyone viewing this. '

Car has been running well other than an issue with the rev limiter engaging. Below is a link to the data log, calibration and a video of in the car during the data log. Issues occur right around 6:36.

First time ever digging into tuning software, I am not sure what is causing this. I thought it was the ICM because of the gauge cluster fluctuations, but then read about the how if the the rev limiter is set to ignition and fuel, the rpm gauge will not work properly.

Let me know if you need anymore information.

B18C1 in a 99 DX hatch, OBD1 converted, s300 v3 P05, built head.

Who socketed your ECU?

IS J12 cut?

Can you post pictures of the soldering done on the bottom of the ECU for the s300?

I am not sure who socketed the ECU, I purchased the motor and ecu second-hand. I will try to find out. The s300 was provisioned, or licensed(can't remember which) by Rich tuned in Washington.

I am not sure if J12 is cut, I will look tonight and post pictures of the soldering done to the bottom of the ECU.

Thank you for the help!!!

What do you mean by provisioned or licensed?

What is the serial number on the s300 board inside the ECU?

I've added photos of the ecu and s300 here:

I remembered incorrectly, I meant to refer to the "Owner's details". Rich Tuned is located there.

J12 is cut.

S300 serial is 48538.

I haven not found out who socketed the ECU.

The calibration may be corrupt. Try creating a new calibration and see if it does the same thing.

I got a new Tune at RichTune. Everything was fine on the dyno, drove home and it started breaking up again.

I have some more data log sessions linked below. I'm scheduled to go back to the shop for a driving session to see if we can diagnose the issue.

It looks like there may be a problem with the ECU socketing or the ECU.

Rich swapped out the ecu, same problem, swapped out the hondata and it seemed to be fine for a few drives and then came back.

No clue what it is at this point. Seems like we can rule the hondata and ecu out at this point.

@spunkster do you have any other suggestions on things you recommend trying?

We swapped in a new fuel pump, checked all engine bay grounds, I pulled the day and visually inspected all wiring, we did a vigorous shake test, nothing yet.

Seems to happen early on in the drive, start with a misfire and then goes into this limp mode.

Thanks in advance.

Try a known good distributor.
