General question K20 - popping/crackle noise for a "sport mode" possible?

Post by typer86 » Mon Aug 08, 2016 2:55 am

Hi Hondata,

any possibility to tune the K engine to make the same noise like the new Focus RS 2016 in sport mode?
I saw this nice feature on the latest Focus RS if the "Sport mode" is selected. In "sport mode" you can hear 3 - 4 bangs from the exhaust after shifting.

In one post of the S300 section you wrote this will damage the engine caused by washing down the piston rings etc.
https://www.hondata.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19182

So do you confirm that programmed bangs and popping noise is not recommended for the K's?

Thanks for the answer.

This would not be a performance, drive-ability, economy or efficiency modification, but cosmetic. You could retard the ignition under high rpm low load conditions and then reduce the overrun cutoff pressure, and see what happens.

Hi Hondata thank you for your reply.

today I tested the new setup but without success.
You can hear popping noise in high rpm in part throttle only (great) but if the clutch is pressed to shift to the next gear - silent!! no popping, crackle noise. :/

I think the injectors are turned off to quick? (injector-time go to zero if tPedal 0%)
I think the the "Overrun cutoff MAP low/high cam (cut)" is not configured correclty but I could not find further information / logic of this part.
I increased the RPM delay between cut and recover and reduced the pressure of the cut table - hmmm

Thanks for tipps or further information to understand the overrun manifold pressure logic.

In the attachment you will find the current calibration and shift-tests.

Edit:
Target to activate the popping and crackle noise:
after reach 3000rpm in low cam
full range in high cam

Maybe I must configure like this to keep open the injectors if the clutch is pressed?

You also need to reduce ignition timing in the first two columns.

Yes it is reduced to 28 degrees. Check my calibration.
Which setting is also missed? I couldn't find the issue...

Could try increasing the overrun fuel cut delay or set the overrun cut rpm to 9000 or something so the injectors don't shut off.

Test #2:
No success - stiffer/quicker shifting (less rev-hang - reving down quicker if the clutch is pressed.)

Summary:
Currently it is not possible for me to create a popping noise during acceleration in the next higher gear.

Further ideas are welcome.

Hello,

Did you succeed in that operation ? I'm interested, owning an fn2 from 2007 with some changes (CAI Injen, 4-2-1 collector without cata, unbridled injectors), i'd like to have these popping/crackle noises ;)

I would say 50% but a real sport mode sound if you release the gas pedal completely - 100% no!

If you touch the gas light, yes I can bring the car to bang as hell but it is anonying because I would only 3 short bangs after the shift process and not permanent - and this does not work - it is impossible with the current hondata FP release. Because the injector cut's off (stop to spray) 1:1 if you release the gas pedal so you will never hear a bang if the engine is well tuned.

I see in the seciton: RevLimits > Anti-Lag (RACE CARS ONLY) - in the RSP based ECU - but it does not work. Injector will be cut off.

It would be easy if hondata provide the possibility to adjust the injector cut off delay time in "ms" after the throttle pedal is released - so I can tune a sporty exhaust sound like the new Ford Focus RS.

Hi Hondata,

how the Focus RS do the exhaust crackle after shifting? It is not possible to add this feature in the Honda ECU too?
All new sport cars have similar functions...
- Hundai-i30n
- Audi-RS
...

Currently it is crap to reduce timing (near to zero) and add extra fuel to wash out the piston rings... To bring exhaust popping if the gas pedal if pressed slightly.
So it would be nice, if a simple way will be offered from you to make 3 or 4 exhaust popps after the shifiting process if the clutch is pressed and gas pedal is released.

=> No flames
=> No permanent popping
===> Only light sporty sound for a well tuned modded sport car

I keep the finger crossed that you will release/add the possibility even if its not a feature for performance gain.

Hi,

I am new owning Honda brand, Type R 2017 to be specific, I was wndering the same question like you.

I got your objetive, but not modifiying the ECU MAP :-)
If Hondata could not help you supplying the correct data or MAP for it, doing that by your self will be very difficult without damage to your engine.

so here you are the key:

You have to modify the Exhaust system.
1; delete your mid resonators, maybe your car has 1 or 2 just below of pilot seat.
Replace it for a High flow performance resonator, I got Borla S Type 10".
2; delete any muffler, if you dont want to have louder level, you could setup a muffler to control it, could you use Yonaka, Borla or Magnaflow, also high flow.

use the sport mode and try Again.
you will notice 3 or 4 pops etc...

I have the 2 original high flow mufflers in case you need

enjoy :-)

Just alter overrun recover/restart .. it will just gargle and pop away on deceleration .. kinda annoying after a while for me personally .. I would recommend having as a second map on the flashpro just so you can change it back easier .. also can't really be good for cylinder walls and piston rings .. bore wash and all that
