VTC removal/ modification

so I have a k24a2 swapped ep3- i was reading one of the tech articles relating to tuning the TSX. it was noted that modifying the VTC to allow 45deg of movement is almost mandatory for a modified engine.... so my question is this: what is involved in removing the VTC mechanism in order for it to be modified?- do i need to remove the intake cam and then take off the VTC gear itself or do i just need to remove the 4 hex holts and remove the mechanism without taking apart the cam/ caps/ gear? any insight would be great!! thanks guys

The whole mechanism would have to be removed.

ok- so the entire gear is going to have to be removed from the cam- that kinda sucks. i was hoping to avoid messing with the tensioner and all thats involved with getting the gear/ cam out. thanks for the info
